How can a Christian keep his life well?

In the philosophy of Darlan Rukih, the Christian life is a sacred trust — a calling to guard both the inner life and the outer life. To live well is not simply to exist, but to walk faithfully in a way that honors God, preserves the soul and respects humanity.

1. Guarding the Inner Life

The inner life is the foundation of a believer’s relationship with God. It is here that thoughts, desires, and character are shaped. A Christian keeps his inner life well by resisting influences that weaken or destroy this relationship:

  • Against loving things that draw the heart away from God.

  • Against thinking things that corrupt the mind and distort truth.

  • Against desiring things that replace holy longing with worldly cravings.

  • Against having a character that contradicts the nature of Christ.

  • Against doing things that break fellowship with God.

The inner life is a sanctuary. To protect it is to ensure that faith remains strong, pure, and unshaken.

2. Living the Outer Life

The outer life is the visible testimony of a believer. It reflects the condition of the heart and is expressed in actions, words, and relationships. A Christian keeps his outer life well by resisting evil things that make it unclean or unholy. This means

  • Rejecting practices that defile the body or reputation.

When the outer life is guarded, it becomes a witness — showing the world the transforming power of God.

Conclusion

To keep life well, a Christian must balance both realms: the unseen inner life and the visible outer life. As Darlan Rukih teaches, neglecting either leads to weakness, but guarding both leads to strength, peace, and a life that glorifies God.
